Snows Cut Bridge
Carolina Beach, North Carolina :Coordinates: 34°3'20"N 77°53'58" In the late 1880s, a small train called the Shoo Fly took passengers over to Carolina Beach. With this new transportation, locals and tourist started going to Carolina Beach and making it a popular destination during the summer. Local families even started to move to the beach for the summer. The steel bridge replaced a temporary wooden bridge while it was being built. A concrete bridge was built between 1961 and 1963 and replaced the steel drawbridge. The new bridge that still exists today is 65 feet above Snow's Cut.Snow's Cut was named after Major William Arthur Snow. A decorated veteran of World War I, Snow served as the district engineer for the Wilmington District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers from June 1926 to October 1930. Snow was in command over the Beaufort to Cape Fear section of the construction of the Intracoastal Waterway. The project, which was completed with independent contractors, was $1.5 million under budget. After completion of the waterway, the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce adopted a resolution in recognition of Snow, naming the land cut in the Carolina Beach section Snow's Cut. Snow is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
